Description:
Some leaders in some organizations think that a way to achieve higher throughput in the deivery pipeline is to put enough pressure on the development team ('you gotta work harder, guys'). Only then their work will be better and faster. Such a mindset is a perfect illustration of an assumption among some leaders that people by default are lazy and they need a boss who will command and control them to push them forward. Let's make a contradictory assumption: people are not lazy and want to do their job best and what blocks them in achieving this is the system they work in. Here comes the uncomfortable truth for the aforementioned leaders: they are responsible for the system people work in! Instead of implicitly accusing people of being lazy, some leaders should blame themselves for creating a system in which people's internal motivation cannot flourish.
Obviously, I will show you no 'tricks' but well-thought and proven ideas from the DevOps world on how to modify the system to help teams deliver value faster and more frequently. Yes, role of a leader is to help the teams and not to manage them. Instead of focusing on local optimizations (within a team) which may lead to a globally suboptimal solution, we will focus on how to change the overall system to optimize it for speed and stability.
